Butterflies

All these butterflies taking up their minerals in the mud. This place was also taking a lot of time of course. All these butterflies asking to take their picture. Also some dragonflies were present in this drying ditch.

It seems a waste of time and energy to travel these long roads with so little trade value. The profit is sufficient however to sustain the life of these men. It proves that micro credits can be a good idea to help people forward. Even 100 Euro for a bicycle is enough to start up a small business.

Pauze

It wasn't long before we made for a stop underneath a big fig tree, because I wanted my first taste of the landscape. The tree is on top of a hill and it was also used by many cyclists with merchandise to catch their breath after a long climb on the sunny dustroad.

The car is a toyota starlet that never let us down on the long trips ahead.

Al snel hadden we even gestopt onder een grote vijgenboom, omdat ik het landschap wel eens even wilde proeven. De boom staat bovenop een heuvel en wordt ook door de vele fietsers met handelswaar gebruikt om even uit te puffen van een lange klim op de zonnige zandweg.

De auto is een toyota starlet, die ons uiteindelijk op de lange trips geen enkele keer in de steek heeft gelaten.

Blue Nile Inn

Right before our first trip to Chaminuka Lodge. We just started driving on some dust roads near the airport until we came across the Chaminuka Lodge signs.

Difficult to imagine this is only the second day of our encounter, five months on the internet accounts for some bonding too.

I was shy and nervous off course, but also elated to meet Maliwa for the first time.
Our first encounter was kind of strange because I had to change some Euro to Dollars to pay for the visa. The officials at the visa office use a 1:1 exchange rate for Euro to Dollar. The exchange rate on the airport bank was not much better though.

So I met Maliwa and her friends Yapaa and Jane looking for a place to change some money, but I still had to return to get my visa and luggage. She was waiting anxiously with her friends and it was awkward to make a quick change of money and return for the luggage.

From the airport we went to the family house to take care of my luggage and later we went to the Blue Nile Inn to have the time to ourselves. The place was very nice with big tidy rooms.

Vlak voor ons eerste tripje naar Chaminuka Lodge. We zijn gewoon maar wat op de onverharde wegen gaan rijden in de buurt van het vliegveld tot we op de borden naar Chaminuka Lodge stuitten. Moeilijk voor te stellen dat dit de pas de tweede dag van onze ontmoeting is, een vijf maanden internet maakt ook vertrouwd. De eerste kennismaking was een beetje vreemd want voor het visum moest ik wat euro's in dollars wisselen, aangezien de verstrekkers van de visa een 1 op 1 koers hanteren. Jammer genoeg was de koers op het luchthavenwisselkantoor niet veel beter. Enfin, toen ik naar het wisselkantoor moest zat Maliwa natuurlijk al te wachten samen met haar vriendinnen Yapaa en Jane. Snel gewisseld weer terug, en wachten op de bagage. Ik was natuurlijk zenuwachtig en verlegen, maar het was een erg leuke eerste kennismaking. Daarna bij Maliwa thuis wat geacclimatiseerd en de bagage uitgesorteerd. In de Blue Nile Inn hebben we onze eerste nacht doorgebracht, goede ruime kamers en een mooi terrein, alleen was er net gespraid tegen muskieten wat de atmosfeer niet ten goede kwam.
